What Is 5-Axis CNC Machining

5 axis CNC machining involves using a CNC machine tool that can move the workpiece or tool simultaneously along five different axes. Standard three-axis machines operate along three linear axes: X, Y, and Z. Five-axis machines, however, incorporate two additional rotary axes (typically the A and B or A and C axes).

You can think of this as being similar to the human wrist. Your arm can move up and down (Z-axis), left and right (X-axis) and forwards and backwards (Y-axis). Yet it is the intricate rotation of the wrist (those two additional axes) that enables you to approach an object from virtually any angle. This is the core benefit of five-axis technology.

    Advantages of 5-Axis Machining

Why use complex 5-axis CNC machining systems? The advantages are clear: higher-quality parts, faster production speeds and lower costs for complex projects.

    Single Setup Machining (Done-in-One)

5-axis CNC machining enables extremely complex parts to be machined in a single setup. This ‘one-off’ approach substantially reduces the time required for fixture installation and recalibration. More importantly, it eliminates the risk of cumulative errors arising from multiple setups, significantly enhancing part precision.

    Machining Complex Geometries and Contours

Features like undercuts, deep cavities, compound angles, and curved surfaces are difficult with 3-axis machining. Some are not possible at all. But with 5-axis CNC machining, these features become routine because the tool can approach the material from the correct direction. This opens the door to designs that were previously avoided due to machining limits.

Improved Surface Finish and Tool Life

5-axis CNC machine can dynamically tilt to consistently maintain the optimum cutting position relative to the workpiece surface. This allows shorter, sturdier cutting tools to be used, thereby reducing vibration and deformation.

The results are plain to see. A superior surface finish is achieved, typically eliminating the need for secondary polishing while extending the service life of the cutting tools.

    Shorter Lead Times

By integrating operations into a single setup and achieving faster cutting speeds, 5-axis CNC machining significantly reduces the time taken to go from a CAD model to a finished part. This accelerates the entire product development cycle.
